A Standards Based Classroom?

Standards Based Classroom?

As educators, we've seen a lot of ideas, strategies and mandates come and go.  Some of these things more useful than others when implemented in the classroom.

James Hearn from the University of Georgia, injunction with the National Post secondary Educational Cooperative concluded, " Classrooms and teaching faculty provide the most direct organizational influences on post secondary student success, with governmental and institutional policies playing notable indirect roles."  (http://nces.ed.gov/npec/pdf/synth_Hearn.pdf).

What a teacher does and how they do it matters.  Good teaching is good teaching.  But, can a Standards Based Classroom help us teach better?  What is a standards based classroom?  Here are some visual examples.  And he's an article (albeit dated) from ASCD.
Also, here are today's PD documents.

We have been charged with implementing a standards based classroom.  The district has asked us to reflect on the questions they've posed on this subject.  In our PLC's today, reflect on the following questions.  Please respond to them individually, thoroughly and thoughtfully.  Here are expectations for blogging.  Also, please reply to two or more posts from others.

Also please put who you are in the post - this can be done by:

1.  Your district google account (email Paul Del Priore if you need help resetting your password).
2.  Logging into you own google account. (You can create an account here - I suggest you do) Or,
3.  Put your name or PLC name right in the post in the comment at the end of your post. (SELECT ANONYMOUS WHERE IT ASKS FOR WHICH ACCOUNT YOU WANT TO USE)

District Questions:

What can I do differently tomorrow to make my classroom a more standards-based classroom?
Next week?

Fourth marking period?

Next school year?

  1. Tomorrow I can concentrate more on my strategies within the LFS lesson plan. Next week, I can take notice of the feedback from the students and how they are in line with the standards. Fourth marking period I can steer the class toward a more student based interaction toward the standards. Next school year a goal to achieve would be to combine the student led and based objectives in combination with the LFS strategies. William Eisenhart

    2. Bill, Good point. LFS reminds me that when we all consider a consistent plan of action and move together down a similar road we can improve our chances for success.

  3. What can I do differently tomorrow to make my classroom a more standards-based classroom?
Tomorrow in my classroom I will look at my current unit and select the vocabulary that is tied to the unit I teach. Normally, I post the vocabulary as I go and then "erase" it when we are not using it. I will begin to work to build a word wall that becomes more comprehensive as we progress.

    Next week?
Next week I will incorporate more Tier 2 & Tier 3 vocabulary.

    Fourth marking period?
For fourth marking period, I can make a more overt effort to post the standards I am teaching in more student friendly terms. I currently do post the standards, but I can rewrite the standards into more student friendly terms.

    Next school year?
Next year I am going to work to determine which standards I should be "hitting". As social studies teachers our standards are skill based. I would like to work more closely with the English teacher to support ELA. I also want to continue to work on incorporating the Civics standards.

    4. I agree that the standards must be put in to more "student friendly" terminology. Sometimes I find that I have to read my standards more than once to make sure I understand them fully!

    5. Always the over achiever! I think it's awesome that you find the value in things and try to figure out how to improve your instruction. Implementing standards effectively have always been a challenge for me....more in a minute I got into a discussion with Kevin! :-)

  4. Tomorrow I can focus on different aspects of the transition standards for our students in the TLC Program.

I can prepare and construct my lesson plans to incorporate the aspects of the transition standards I may not be focusing on within our TLC Program.

Next year I can work with the TLC Team to see if we can focus in a uniform fashion.

Next Week: Have students check learning outcomes to posted outcomes.
4th MP: Utilizing an agenda for one class per lesson.

    1. I agree Kevin. We would really benefit from an online system that we all use. Which one do you think works best?

    2. Kevin- I need to do that also. I need to refer to the standards during class instead of just posting them. MF

  6. What can I do differently tomorrow to make my classroom a more standards-based classroom?
I can start by posting my objectives on to my agenda.

    Next week?
I can share my standards with the students more often and use technology to share standards with the students.

    Fourth marking period?
We'll fourth marking period is right around the corner! I'd be interested in using technology for a full fledged incorporation of the standards.

    Next school year?
By next year, I'd be interested in taking the summer to learn more about effective implementation of standards in the classroom. I'd like to learn more about how to do it effectively. I'd also like to see how to implement a standards based instuction in the best possible way.

    1. Mr. Del- I really liked that you noted today that the most important element in education/student achievement is the classroom teacher. I thought your intro to the PD was excellent in reminding us of that fact. Strategies and initiatives come and go. Good teaching that utilizes relevant and rigorous lessons and curriculum while at the same time strengthening student/teacher relationships is timeless and universal and will ALWAYS lead to student growth. 7. Tomorrow I will post the PA State Health and PE standards in my room. Next week I can start adding the objectives to my do now slide in addition to the LEQ. In the fourth marking period I can add word walls to my room. Next year I want to put everything together and find a way to manage my time effectively while implementing all of the standards based strategies.

  8. Tomorrow I will use the results of the test to determine how well the students are making connections to the stated learning outcomes. Next week I will extend the student knowledge about trig values to graphing and data.
During the 4th marking period, I will continue to help students make connections between what they know and what they will be learning in student friendly language while still learning the vocabulary. Deb Crawford
