Let's Watch the Following Clip

Why do we teach the way we teach? What locks us into our pedagogical habits? Can technology make us do what we do better?  Why or why not?  Write 8 lines about this topic. Also, be sure to respond to two or more posts from others.  Here are expectations for blogging

  2. We teach the way we teach because we have most likely found a style that is (or has been) successful. I think what locks us in to our habits is that we are being evaluated on our success on standardized tests so we are afraid to try something new because we don't know if it will work. Technology can be helpful but sometimes is more novelty than necessary. I have used technology very successfully but I have also tried some technology that has not been successful. I think more educators need to embrace the new without disregarding the old, tried and true methods of instruction. This means we aren't adding technology for the sake of adding technology but rather we are being mindful and intentional in the technology that is added.

  3. We teach the way we teach out of equal parts habit and desperation. we balance our need for safe, predictable outcomes with our need to teach (and ourselves learn) something new: to escape boredom even. Technology (if properly supported) may allow us to find new ways of reaching young brains and assess outcomes more efficiently. The learning curve for teachers however is long where time and energy is in short supply.

    1. John, I agree with you when you said, "Technology (if properly supported) may allow us to find new ways of reaching young brains and assess outcomes more efficiently." I think if we try something in small increments we can increase our chances for success.

  4. I think sometimes I struggle with technology because I fear it won't always work consistently. Sometimes, we use it and all goes smoothly for me, other times, it's like I can't seem to get anything to work right. This is a big distractor and I end up using it but not as much as I would really like to. I have used sites like ning.com and edmodo and I really like that the kids are excited and engaged.

  5. We are unable to use many of the tools available to us due to archaic rules from the district .

    1. I find that finding the time to plan a solid activity is more of a challenge.

    2. We have an archaic curriculum to go with our archaic rules. How about a full lesson on dictionaries, atlases, almanacs, and encyclopedias? No one prepares students for the 19th Century like we do.

    3. I think good points are made here. It's important to try to be successful and try to help those opposing your vision so see the light. From my experience, many are open minded if you make your case for what you believe in.

  6. Developing a habit seems like a luxury of having the same job. Also I have magpie problems- attraction to newest shinny thing. I usually turn to new technology when I face a need in my class. How do I get the DoNow? Collect alb reports? keep from making more copies? grade faster? The principal made the point but I turn to my online community.

  7. I'm still receiving mixed messages. Are the students allowed to use mobile learning devices or are cell phones still banned?

  8. Happy military day. Rock n Robin Tweet Tweet. If you can't beat them, join them. Using cell phones in a constructive way for learning is an interesting idea, as long as technology is not used for technologies sake and doesn't replace the learning that was supposed to be done.

    1. I like what you said here when you said, "as long as technology is not used for technologies sake and doesn't replace the learning that was supposed to be done." I agree wholeheartedly. And, I think it's important as well to try things and risk failure in order to experience educational breakthroughs.

I couldn't agree more. We need to find ways that technology improves instruction and building relationships. Good teaching is good teaching. Hopefully, technology can help us instruct better.
